Discussing A Hand In Play

Question: Looking for your opinion on something...

All in situation playing NL. Player 1 shows his cards and is the underdog to Player 2. Player 3, who is not in the hand, tells the table that he folded one of Player 1's outs to win the hand. Player 1 gets pissed off that Player 3 opened his mouth. I wasn't involved in the hand that led to the dispute, but if got me to thinking that I've never heard this discussed.

Is it bad protocol to discuss outs in this situation, after all the money is in and after all the cards are face up?

Thanks,

Answer:

There is a general rule that basically states you aren't supposed to discuss hands while they are in play, but that doesn't really apply to this hand, since the players already had both cards face up. There was no real play left. A "play" is defined as an action/option remaining. So in this case, while the guy is upset, nothing should or would happen. Often times in cases like this someone gives this information and usually the players are happy to hear it.

Now, it is totally different when there is a player still left to act, and someone not in the hand says something. That is clearly against the holdem rules. In a cash game, most likely the person would get a warning (if the other player called over the floorman). Then after that if the guy kept acting up, the floor might ask him to sitout for a half an hour or so. If that didn't work, then he would be asked to leave. It's really rare to see anyone leave for reasons like this. Usually the only time people get ejected from the cardroom is when they are belligerent -- for whatever reason.

It takes a lot for them to kick you out of a cardroom and the punishments aren't very severe. I've even seen fist fights break out and the guy is back the next day (he plays in big games though). In a tournament, the rules are more strictly enforced. The guy could get some sort of penalty like being forced to sitout and get blinded of for a set amount of time.
