Answer: If regular straight forward play was winning at the limits you are playing at, then by all means continue that. What happens as you progress up the limit ladder is that you have to start mixing up your play more to get value for your good hands since everyone there has about the same knowledge as you do. I don't recommend that you do anything fancy unless you have to. It is the case that people come and go through out a poker session; you don't need to know everything about their play but you should be able to pick up a few key points about them by just watching a few hands in which they are involved.

My main point before was talking about starting hand selection. You should be aware of what people raise with and when so that you can gauge your starting hands. You might fold AT against one type of player but call or reraise another. You need to pigeon hole each player's style so you can choose the best counter strategy. As you move up in limits people are more aggressive in marginal situations while others still play regular tight poker. You need to know who is doing what so they don't run over you in every hand.

Whenever I sit down at a new table I start off by playing regular tight, book smart poker. I don't risk anything until I have a good understanding of how everyone is playing. From there I will lower my "tightness" based on how everyone else is playing. Being a good poker player is realizing how much is too much.
