Comparing Two Flushes

Question: Hi:

First I want to tell you I enjoy your website a lot, lots of really good information and tips to play better, so thank you. I was wondering if you can help me answer a question: see some of my friends and I were playing texas holdem, the community cards show: 2d, 5d, 7d, 10d, and Kd so there is actually a flush of diamons in the community cards, now the other players don't have a better hand than the one showing in the community cards except for one player that has an 8 of diamonds, now my question is can that player use his 8 of diamonds to make a higher flush by removing the 2 of diamonds from the community cards and win the hand or does it have to be a tie?

Again Thank you very much for your help and for taking the time to read this e-mail.

Answer: Yes you are correct that the person with the 8 of diamonds in their hand wins. Even though they both have King high flushes, one person has a better five cards then the other person so he gets the pot. This is the only hand evaluation in holdem that is kind of confusing. Just remember that the best five cards win.
