Comparing straights and no limit all-ins...

Question: I was playing some texas hold 'em with some friends and we ran into a few questions:

1. If the community cards are dealt a straight, 5-6-7-8-9 and one player has a 5-A and the other has an 8-Q who wins and why?

2. We have been playing no limit poker. Whereas we can bet as "all in" whenever we want. If someone bets all in with $1000 can others match with $500 and $700? Furthermore, if the $500 bet wins what is his payout? Who gets the rest of the money if the $700 hand has the 2nd best hand?

Thanks

Answer 1: Thanks for the questions Brian. To answer the first question, remember that in texas holdem the best five cards win. Splitting the pot (called "chopping" it), is allowed so it is possible to have ties (even between many players). This happens pretty often actually with the example you gave. Both you and your opponent would take half of the pot and the extra chip (if there is one) goes to the first player in order by turn (clockwise). See player 1 has the best cards 5-6-7-8-9 and player 2 has the best cards 5-6-7-8-9. You both have the same hand. You both "play the board" and chop the pot. Being able to recognize these situations is helpful because you don't want to fold if you can just split it.

Flushes are slightly different and now is a good time to bring them up. Let's say you held Ac2d and your friend had Kc6d. The community cards made a flush of diamonds: AdKdJd4d Notice that the board has an Ace high flush. Your friend would actually win though because his 6d beats the board and you can't beat the board. Your 2d doesn't beat the smallest diamond on the board (4d). I never understood this rule but I guess it goes back to "the best five cards win" even though an Ace high flush is an Ace high flush.

Answer 2: Your second question brings up the confusing subject of "side pots" and "going all in". The underlying rule to dealing with this stuff is a person can't win more from each of the players then they bet themselves. So if I went all in for $100, I can't win more from you then $100 and I couldn't win more from your friend then $100. That makes things fairer. It wouldn't be fair if I had $20 left and could win the entire pot when everyone else still bet after I put my last chip in. Because of this, we have "side pots".

A side pot is a pot that only certain people are able to win. The main pot everyone has a chance in. I'll use your example to illustrate this. Let's say your friend bet $1000. You wanted to call him but only had $500 left. You would go "all-in". The friend behind you now also wanted to call so he has to go all in with his $700. What would happen is that the first guy with the 1k bet would take back $300 right then because no one could match it. Remember no one can win more then they wager themselves from each player.

Then there would be a main pot and a side pot. The main pot would hold $1500, $500 from each of you because that was all you could wager. Then there would be a side pot of $400 (200 from each of your friends). All three of you would be battling it out for the 1500 in the main pot but only they would be battling it out for the side pot. So even if you had the best overall hand one of them would take the other $400 down.

This is true of limit and no limit holdem games. You see people going all-in all the time at the casino. If you have one chip left and it is worth $1, the best thing you can hope for is that all the players will be in and you win. Then you would win $10 (10 players at a buck each). But any bets that happened over your buck you wouldn't have a right to win.

Finally, I think I answered the questions but just to make sure you get specific answers:

Furthermore, if the $500 bet wins what is his payout?

He would win $1500 total (500 x 3 players). The other money would go to one of the other guys.

Who gets the rest of the money if the $700 hand has the 2nd best hand?

That depends on if you mean 2nd best hand for the main pot or side pot.

Actually either way he loses. He either has to be number 1 for the main pot or number 1 for the side pot or he doesn't get anything.
