Answer:

The rule in texas holdem is that, "the best five cards win." What that means is that when you are evaluating hands for declaring a winner, you look at the possible seven cards -- two personal cards and five community cards -- and you use the best of those five. If we apply that rule to your scenario above, we see that both players have the same hand: 45678

Now, what if the river was an Ace instead of the 8? So the flop/turn/river were: 4567A

Then the player with the 55 would win with: 555A7 versus the other player's AA765

I think the reason this rule confuses new players is because they aren't used to the idea of players having tie hands. Also, it is completely possible for the flop to have the best hand possible -- as in your case. When the flop has the best possible hand, we say "the board plays." An example of the flop having the best hand is: AKQJT (no flushes). If that were the case, then all remaining players in the hand would split the pot. Remember though, that if you ever find yourself in a situation like this, you need to still play the hand out as you normally would. If you muck your cards early, since you recognize it is chopped pot, you won't get any of it. Protect your cards until you get your chips, then let the dealer muck your hand.

Question 2: We were having a home game of Texas Holdem and this came up,could you please help us with the answer.

Player 1 has 3 of spades & 10 of hearts

Player 2 has Ace of diamonds & 5 of clubs

the 5 cards in the middle were 5,8,10,Q,K of spades

The question is: do you have to use a card in your hand to make the best 5 or can you use only the middle cards. We were not doing split pots, it was high card wins.

Answer 2:

No, you do not need to use a card in your hand to make the best five cards; you can just use the community ones. For one player to win the above hand, instead of splitting the pot, someone would have had to have a spade in their personal cards larger than the 5 on the board.
