Chopping Pots Between All-in Players

Question: Hello.

I know you've had this question asked many times, but I couldn't really seem to find the answer because all of the situations described have been the reverse.

Let's say it's heads-up between two players. Player A has $250 and Player B has $50. Now, what happens if Player A goes all-in FIRST and then Player B calls by also going all-in. The flop came up Ten, Jack, Ace. The turn was a King and the river was a Queen. So, it turned out to be a split pot because we had the same straight.

But when dividing the money, since Player A went all in first, isn't the $300 supposed to be split equally? Meaning, Player A gets $150 and Player B gets $150. Or, does Player A get his $250 back and Player B gets his $50 back. Which is correct?

You response would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer: What happens is that you have a side pot and a main pot. Player A goes all-in for $250 and Player B calls him for $50. Since Player B can only match $50 of the $250 wagered two pots are created:

- $100 Main pot that both players can win

- $200 Side pot that only Player A can win

So really Player A just takes his $200 back first since they are heads up. Then we evaluate the rest of the hand. Since it is a chop pot then each player gets their $50 back.

The end result is that no one wins or loses anything.
