Chip Leader Play

Question: Awesome site, just one question. A problem I seem to be having when I play hold'em is that I am chip leader by a lot, but then somehow it always seems my chips disappear, as was the case in the last tournament I played with my friends. I know the basic rules of what the chip leader should do, like being aggressive and betting a lot. But it seems that everytime I do this, I eventually lose all my chips. I'm not raising with any 2 cards, and I don't think I'm doing anything else really stupid. Also, my friends hate raising the blinds, especially if they're low stack, even if we all agreed before the tourney to raise them every 1/2 hour or so. So I look like a dumbass trying to tell them to raise the blinds over and over, and they refuse to and go "oh, stop complaining, look at you're stack." I guess I'm just wondering if you have any advice how to play when you're the chip leader, and sometimes how to play when the blinds aren't as big of factor as they should be. Thanks.

Answer: First of all, don't let them get away with that bs. If you all agree to raise the blinds before the game starts, then stick to it. I'm sure they wouldn't do you that same favor if you were the guy who was about the get busted out and they had all the chips.

Aggression is part of playing well at the final table in tourneys if you are the chip leader but you have to apply that aggression carefully. If you see someone with few chips then it is likely that if you put them all-in, they will call. Not having the blinds upped every x amount of time or hands takes away a lot of your advantage as the chip leader. When you have the most chips at the table your advantage comes primarily from the fact that other players are going to be forced to play hands quicker than they like or the blinds will eat them up.

The best advice I can give you is to play hands that do well heads up and leverage your stack and position against the little guys. Make them decide if they want to play for all their chips and keep banging away. At the same time though, you don't want to get involved in every pot. You don't mind if they battle it out and drop a player or two.
