Chip Colors For Tourney

Question:

My question involves the basic setup of a no-limit texas holdem tournament for approximately 10 players.

Every tourmanent we either make all the chips the same value or have five separate values for each chip color. Having different values in this setup seems to confuse people because there are so many different values, but we only have 300 chips and making each chip worth the same value makes the tournament go too fast. We have tried keeping the blinds at 1-2 for an extended period of time, but we still find ourselves down to 4 or 5 people in a half hour. Having the different values seemed to give people more time to get settled and enabled us to comfortably raise the blinds every twenty minutes. The ideal finishing time is normally 4 hours after we began.

Is it better to have two different chip values or just continue to keep all the chips the same value.

Answer: If you have 10 players and 300 chips, if you broke it down making all chips the same denomination it would give each player only 30 chips. Thirty chips really isn't that much, even for $1/2 limits. If you are playing no limit then it will go even faster. I would break it down into just two different denominations; maybe a $1 chip and a $10 chip. In no limit holdem, the tendency is for new players to get busted out for all their chips early on but having more money to work with will help slow the game down for the players who are being more conservative.
