Check Raising Allowed?
I got a rule question for you, and this one has really been bothering me. I'd be playing no-limit hold 'em with a few of my friends and during the bet, one of my friends would check, the person next to him would raise, and then it would get back to him and he would re-raise them. I never seen anyone do this before until I started playing with him and then I argued with him over the fact that once you check and someone puts in a bet, you can only call that bet and you cannot re-raise cause you already checked. I am right or wrong? I looked everywhere online, at official game rule guides, but I couldn't find an answer to my "check and then re-raise" question.

Answer: Yes, that is allowed and it is called a checkraise. There are a few reasons you would use this. The first reason is to get more money in the pot. This is the classic way to slow play a hand. You check to the person and they bet, you call. Then on the turn card you check again and when they bet you raise. The other reason for check raising is usually to protect your hand against a large number of opponents when you are in early position.
For example, if you were playing limit holdem and you had AT in the big blind and the flop was A-J-T and everyone had called preflop, the best move would probably be to go for a check raise on the flop to try to knock out some of the opponents in the middle. Ideally what you would want to happen is to have everyone check to someone in late position who would bet, then you would raise and force the people in the middle to call two bets cold if they wanted to play.
Lastly, check raising is always a stronger move then a regular raise so check raise bluffs are more potent and dangerous. If you are an expert heads up or shorthanded holdem player you'll have a check raise bluff on the turn card in your arsenal of moves.
