Cards Hitting Flop Cards During Showdown

Question: My brother-in law and I recently played a tourney game at a card hall. The rule was, If you called and showed your hand and any card touched the flop. You were called for mucking the cards and disqualified from winning the pot.

So we tried playing it this way at home with 6 players and sure enough it happened. Player A hit a straight with the last card and laid them on the flop. Player B said nice hand, but you lose to my pair because you mocked the cards? He got mad and left game.

We did state at beginning it was a rule. But I got burned and so did another person. I hate the rule and don't think we will play it that way in the future. But is it a RULE?

Please E-mail me back, so I can get my buddy to talk to me again.

Thanks

Ken

Answer: You guys have it a little mixed up. The rule in every card room I've played in is that if the cards touch the muck pile, they are dead; not the flop cards. A good portion I showdown my hands, they hit the flop cards -- especially if I'm in the middle seats. The reason the rule is there about the muck pile (the pile of cards face down [burn cards, folded cards, ect]) is because, in the event of cards getting mixed up in the larger pile of cards, it would be pretty subjective as to which cards were counted; all up to the dealer. Most of the rules in cardrooms are there to first of all, of course, protect the players and the game, but secondly there to make decisions black and white.

If I were you, I wouldn't use these rules in home games. Poker rules are here to protect, not persecute. The above example is about as petty as you can get. There was no confusion in this hand, the guy with the straight obviously had the best hand. I would be upset if I was in his situation and lost the hand because of some technicality.
