Canada's Biggest No Limit Holdem Tourney

Question: My story is this.......In Regina, Sk. Canada there is a No Limit Texas Holdem tourney at the end of this month that i won a seat for through a satalite. This tournament is $1000 buy in and is going to be televised. People all across canada are coming. it is going to be great.

But my question is how should i play this tourney to be successful. I want the gold.

see the structure is like this....

it has two stages.......

Top 3 Beginner Rooms

1st stage

start out with $10,000 in chips

blind time is 40 mins

blinds start at 25 / 50

antes start at level 9

only 350 players can play on day one, two, and three.

the top 10% from each day advance to stage two. but if you lose on the first day you can re-buy for the second day.

if you lose the second day you can re-buy for the third day

if you lost the third day you are out of the tourney.

2nd stage

everyone is in the money now.

there are about 105 players playing for approx $350,000 for first place.

the chips you have accumulated from stage 1 are carried forward to this stage.

everyone keeps playing until one last man is standing........No deals are allowed.

--- see i get to pick what day i want to play, but i can not afford to re-buy so i only have one shot that this........what day would you think would be a good day........i was thinking the last because everyone that day will be worried that if they dont make it they are eliminated. thus they might lay down more hands then normal.

--- what would you strategy be for stage one and stage two if you were in this tourney.

your help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Answer: First off, if only the players with the top 10% of the chips continue from each day, you need to make sure you have a good idea of where everyone is chip wise throughout the day. If you don't already have a chip lead, you are going to have to gamble before it is too late. Secondly, if I did get into the 10% really quickly, say after only a couple hours on the first day, I would play ultra tight. There would be no reason to take on any risk.

There will be many players at the end of each day pushing all their chips in because if they don't win, they are out. This will make for an interesting situation. See, there is no point in having $50k chips if it takes $60k to make it after day one. I would find out how many people entered on the day you decide to play, then figure out exactly what 10% is, so you can get there and hold the position.

Then in stage two you can work on building the stack again. As for which day to play on, I'm not sure what this structures effect will be. You could make the argument that players will gamble more on the first and second days because they have another chance, but the flipside is that people tend to gamble more and take more risks when they are pressured. If I were you, I would play on the first day. The main reason is that no one you'll be playing with has had the experience from the previous day -- you'll all be equally nervous.

Secondly, you may have a good number of people who are willing to play a little worse on the first day just because they plan to make use of the rebuy. If these assumptions are true, you shouldn't have trouble getting action on your good hands, so I would wait for premium cards only. The blind structure is slow enough to allow for lots of play.
