Blind Structure For No Limit Tourney Home Game

Question: Hello:

Your opinion and expertise, please, as to what the BIG and SMALL blind structure might be for No Limit Hold'Em home games.

The buy-ins are $5 for $500 in chips; $10 for $1,000 in chips; $15 for $1,500 in chips; $20 for $2,000 in chips; $25 for $2,500 in chips. We might also have occasional games of $50 for $5,000 or $100 for $10,000 in chips..

Also, please advise as to what the ante might be for these games.

These are friendly games - players have various levels of playing experience.

Your site is Great! Thanks for some very valuable info.

Warm regards,

Answer: When you set the blinds for tourneys you have three things in mind; one, how long you want the tourney to last; two, how many chips you start with; three, how many total players there are. For $500 and $1000 chips I would raise the blinds every 15 minutes and start with $5/10 then $10/20, $15/30, $30/60, $40/80, etc.

You can raise them less gradually if you have a lot of people playing. If you only have a table or two you probably want to keep it around that range. If you have twice that many chips to begin with then I would double the size of the blinds. For example, with $2500 - $5000 chips you could do $10/20, $20/40, $50/100, $75/150, etc. You get the idea...

Like I mentioned above though, adjust the blinds based on how many total chips there are too (how many players are playing). You can also incorporate an ante during the entire game, the later rounds, or not at all. I kind of like antes for home games because it makes the pots bigger and gets the action going more then just blinds.
