Big Blind And Small Blind Options?

Question: I am hoping you can clarify 2 texas holdem rules for me. In a $3/5 limit game, small blind puts in $1 and big blind puts in $3. The person to the left of the big blind: 1) Has to bet? or can he check?

The person you are talking about is in the "under the gun" position. This is the seat directly after the big blind. It is the worst position to be in since you have to act before seeing what anyone else is going to do.

To answer your question, this person has to either call, raise or fold. No one can check preflop unless it is the big blind. See the big blind acts as a forced bet. So in this case he would call $3, raise or fold. Checking isn't an option because there is already a "bet" -- the big blind's money ($3). So if you want to see the flop you'll have to put money in one way or another.

No one gets a free ride. Only on later betting rounds (flop, turn and river) is it possible for everyone to check and the next card is shown.

If this person bets $3 and there are calls all the way around: 2) Does the small blind have to call $3 or does he 'get credit' for his $1 small blind ante and only have to call $2?

Yes that is correct. If you are in the small blind, the money you were forced to put in before you get your cards works towards your bet (like you said a credit). This also works to the same way for the big blind. For example if you put in $3 in the big blind and someone raise it to $6 total, then you would just have to put in another $3. The small blind would have to put in $5 more to call the $6 since he already had $1 in.

Same for big blind, does he 'get credit' for his $3 big blind ante and he doesn't have to put anything in that turn if he just wants to call?

Thanks.
