Big Blind All-In - BB Amount

Question: I have noticed on online poker sites that when a player is the big blind and is all in, but doesn't have enough to call the blind that the players still in only have to call what the big blind is in for and not the whole blind.

Example:

Blinds are $200/$400

John is in the small blind of $200

Jane is in the big blind but only has $250

Do the other players have to call $250 or must they call $400? In our home games we play that all players must call the $400. What if any are the offical rules on this situation?

I have not been able to find any poker rules online for this and I hope you can help.

Thanks

Answer:

Yes, the online poker sites have the correct rule: If the big blind can't cover the regular limit, then the bet that everyone has to call, is whatever the big blind goes all-in for. So the in example you have above, the players would have to call $250. The reason for this is because the big blind is just considered the initial bet. The only difference between a big blind bet and other bets is that the big blind bet is forced.
