Best Way To Learn Holdem

Question: Is there a better way of learning, practacing, gaining experience than playing with real money at low stakes no limit holdem games? It would appear to me that using real money and against real players at real games would be the best way to learn, sharpen your game, is that so and if not what are the drawbacks? Thanks for being so generous with your time.

Answer:

Not that I know of, no. I think the best way to learn is to play. Playing alone won't make you better though. I think a combination of real money play and research is the best. Online you can find games that are even .5c/.10 so you can have $20 and play for a long time. If you are too young to play for real money, you can play with friends, or for free.

The internet is a huge resource, not only for poker sites to play on, but also watch. I think one of the best ways to learn is to watch other people play. You can go onto just about any online poker site and observe real games. I would do this as much as you can. Watch what winning players are doing and try and put it within the context of your studies.

Just make a note that low limit games aren't the same as bigger games. There are changes as you move up so don't think that the way a person playing a $100/200 and doing well would play the same at a $1/2 game. And like I said, try to read as much as you can. Get some books and study some. That will get you started and then you can flesh out your knowledge as you gain more experience. When you start playing, take the approach that you have a lot to learn, which is actually encouraging. You don't learn how to play at an expert level in a few months. It is going to take time and you actually never stop learning.

Take baby steps and watch your bankroll so you can make sure to stay in action (playing). Lastly, try to actually learn from your play instead of just going through the motions. If you lose, think about why that was. If you won, think about why that was. You may not have enough experience yet to make sense of it all, but there are underlying principles that govern everything; work towards gaining that insight.
