Best Five Cards - Three Pair

Question: I have a question regarding the rule of "the best five card" hand. Is there such a rule as the highest five cards. I'll try to illustrate it with an example…I hope I get it right.

Community cards: two pair, Aces and Tens with a 9

In my hand I have a pocket pair of 8's.

The other person in on the showdown has the two pair in the community and King high in his hand.

The argument arose when we revealed our cards. I had three pair with the community cards. The other players claimed that the five highest cards won since there were two pair in the community that were higher than my cards. Therefore, the highest cards were the pair of Aces, the king and the pair of tens, hence, the other player won. Was that ranked appropriately, or should have I won the hand with my pair of eights, or should it have been a split pot?

Thanks for your help.

Answer: Unfortunately your friends are right and you lost the hand. That's what we call getting screwed. Your friend has AATTK and you just have AATT8. If the board wasn't paired twice, you would have won. This happens every now and then, sometimes even with quads. I remember one that happened to me when I had QQ. The flop was KKK and the other guy had AJ. The turn was a Q and the river was a K making the board K-K-K-Q-K Notice now that the quads are on the board, I can't beat it. I just have quad kings with a Q kicker and he has quad kings with and Ace kicker. So I lost the pot and my tempter.
