Answer: When you are first learning how to play figuring out what could beat you is tough. All I can say is that it will become second nature as you get more experience. Until then, I think the best method you can use to learn this skill is to get a deck of cards, deal yourself a hand and then deal the flop/turn/river. Look at each flop and then figure out what the "nuts" are (the best possible hand). Also, you can deal in two hands and go heads up with someone else to the river.
Then compare the hands and see at what point you lost. Doing this over and over will teach you how to read the board cards and see what could potentially beat you. After you have that down, start playing some online for free or watching some games online where people are playing for real money. Eventually it will all make sense but you just have to get the ball rolling.
After I just got done writing all of this, it dawned on me that you probably already do know how to play but are looking for tips on how to read hands. If that is the case, the best advice I can give you is to watch the person's style of play before you are in a confrontation with them. You want to know how they bet, how they raise, what cards they play, etc. Then you can put it all together and figure out where you stand based on their previous play, their betting in this hand, the flop and what you have.
