Ace Is Both High And Low?

Question: Q-CAN THE ACE BE USED TO GET A STRAIGHT-A-2-3-4-5.LOOKING THROUGH CARD RANKINGS AND RULES, DID NOT SEE THIS LISTED ANYWHERE.

THIS IS ALLOWABLE IN GIN, AND A FRIEND OF MINE INSIST IT CAN BE USED IN TEXAS-HOLDEM.

I SAY YOU CAN NOT USE THIS STRAIGHT.

WOULD LIKE EXPLANATION EITHER WAY.

THANKS, MIKE

Answer: Yes, it is correct that you can use the Ace for both high and low hands:

Ace High Straight (called "broadway"): A - K - Q - J - T

Five High Straight (called "wheel"): 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - A

So the Ace in holdem is either high or low depending on what makes the best hand. The Ace doesn't connect the cards in a loop though. You couldn't do a straight like this: Q - K - A - 2 - 3
