Question about odds and Big Slick

Question:

Love your concise page of odds, yet site the following apparent discrepancy: You list the odds of 2 overcards improving to a pair by the river at only 26%. Yet, you list the odds of AK hitting an A or a K by the river at even. How are these 2 scenarios not the same thing?

Answer:

Hi Randy,

When we talk about overcards we assume that the flop has already been dealt (for example, you're holding Q-J and the flop is 9-4-3). And when the flop has been dealt, there are only two more cards to come. In the other case, when we talk about the chances of the starting hand AK improving by the river, all five community cards are yet to come.
