Not enough to cover blind

I just finished playing a game of Texas hold'em where my friend who had $10 in chips left was told he could no longer play because he didn't have enough chips to cover the big blind, which was $40.

I am pretty sure he should have been allowed to play, but only for $10 from each player. I think this is right but not 100% sure, could someone please explain in detail so I can print it off and bring to the next game. Thanks Dennis

Answer:

Hi Dennis,
I don't know where you and your friend were playing (a home game or a card room?), but I assume that you were playing in a cash game.

The usual rule is that you are allowed at the table as long as you have chips left, but as you said, if you only have $10 (with a $40 BB) you will only be able to win $10 from each player. (On the other hand, if you run out of chips at the table most places have a minimum buy-in if you want to continue playing.)

Hope this clarifies the matter.
