Learning poker strategy before making the leap to real money tables

I have just started playing texas holdem. I started at the free money sections online at pokerstars, but they aren't quite realistic, there are people who go all in every time, and people aren't afraid since nothing to risk, so never fold. I was wondering what you'd recommend to someone just starting, that understands the basic rules, but wants to learn the strategy better, before playing real money games.

Hi Alex,

You are right, free money games aren't that realistic. People usually need to risk something to play seriously. Therefore it's hard to learn poker strategy by playing in play money games. I would recommend you to try freeroll tournaments to learn more strategy without risking any real money. People still gamble a lot in freerolls, but the fact that you are playing for something tends to make people take it more seriously, especially in the later stages of a tournament.

When you feel ready I advice you to take a leap to the micro stakes real money tables. Even though you play for really small sums, the difference compared to play money tables is huge and you will learn a lot more.

Good luck!
