Kicker Trouble

Question:

I am bluffing with only ace high in my hand. My daughter is holding K5. The flop produces a pair of 10s and a pair of 6s plus a 5. Does my daughter win with her resulting pair of 5's or is it negated by the higher pairs and therefore ace high beats her king? My grandson said I win with ace high. Please solve this family dispute. Thanks!

Answer:

Based on the amount of questions I receive, you're not the only one who's uncertain about what happens in this situation. One might think that your daughter wins this pot since she has "three pairs." Unfortunately, there's no poker hand with three pairs. A poker hand consists of five cards, and it's therefore impossible to make three pairs. In this hand, you both have two pair: Ts and 6s. To determine the winner you have to look at the fifth card, or the kicker if you want to use poker lingo. Your fifth card is an ace, and your daughter has a king. Your grandson is absolutely right - you win the pot.
