Is peeking at misdealt cards allowed?

Question:

Hi,

I have a question about an argument that happened in my last poker game.

My friend who was dealer at the time jus finished giving out the cards when he realized he dealt the cards wrong (he skipped giving cards to someone), so we decided to re-deal the cards.

Out of curiosity I decided to look at one guy's cards because he got angry at the fact the dealer made such a dumb mistake. I saw he had an ace and king same suited. Then the guy gets furious with me because I looked at his cards saying that he mucked, but my defence was that the cards weren't going to be played anyway, so there was no harm done.

Still he insists whether the cards are gonna be in play or not if he muck I am not allowed to look. Is this true?

Answer:

Hi Skatepunker,

Perhaps you didn't break any rule by looking at the other player's cards, but it's definitely a very impolite thing to do. I can certainly understand why he was so upset. Shame on you!
