Answer:
Hi Devin,
Eleven individual states in the U.S. have decided to ban online gambling.
The states are:
* Illinois (Ill)
* Indiana (Ind)
* Louisiana (La)
* Michigan (Mich)
* Nevada (Nev)
* New Jersey (N.J.)
* New York (N.Y.)
* Oregon (Ore)
* South Dakota (S.D.)
* Washington (Wash)
* Wisconsin (Wis)
There is no federal law that specifically bans online poker. However, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was passed in the the U.S. Congress on Sept. 30, 2006, prohibits U.S. financial institutions from processing U.S. citizens' deposits and withdrawals at gambling sites. This includes online poker rooms and online casinos.
In addition to this, the UIGEA makes it illegal for online gambling companies to accept monies from U.S. financial institutions.
As a result of the UIGEA being passed, many online poker sites withdrew from the U.S. market. There are still, however, several poker rooms that are open for Americans. These rooms are marked with an American flag in the top lists here at Learn-Texas-Holdem.com.
