Is it allowed to ignore the sidepots?
QUESTION
My question is about all in after the flop. Player A went all in. I called the all in as player B. Player C raised and player D called. I then checked but was told I had to call player C or fold as I still had chips left. I said I only wanted to compete for the all in and not the side pot I was over ruled and had to fold or match player C. What is the correct ruling as I understood the rules as side bets are not compulsory?
Many thanks/Glenn Burnside

ANSWER
Of course you have to call all the players bets if you want to continue play in the pot. You cant just choose to call a few players and ignore the other ones. This is a very basic rule in poker. So yes, you have to call player C or fold. Note that player C is using a basic tactic when a player is all in and there are other callers. This tactic is employed by many players when they have a hand that does well against few players, but not many opponents. What they do then is that they try to push the other players out of the pot so that they will only face the all in guy.
