Hi Kyle,
In a Texas Hold'em game, each player has two personal cards (called hole cards), and there are five community cards on the table. You goal is to create the best possible five-card poker hand by combining your hole cards with the community cards. You can use both your hole cards, one of them or none of them (in which case you play the board).
An example: you are holding Ah-4h. We will now look at how you can match that hand with three different boards.
Board 1: Kh-Ts-8h-3c-Jh
By using both your hole cards you can create an ace-high flush: Ah-Kh-Jh-8h-4h.
Board 2: Kh-Ts-Qd-3c-Jh
By using only the Ah, you can create an ace-high straight: Ah-Kh-Qd-Jh-Ts.
Board 3: Js-Th-7c-9h-8d.
In this case there is a jack-high straight on the board and none of your hole cards can improve that hand. Thus, you play the board: Js-Th-9h-8d-7c.
Under the link you can find a ranking of Texas Holdem hands.
