Getting Ready as the 2008 WSOP Approaches

The 2008 WSOP is coming up, and it's time to get excited. As the 2008 WSOP approaches, there are a few ways to prepare to make sure that you can get the most out of the World Series of Poker experience.

Watch the WSOP on Television

Watching old episodes of the World Series of Poker on ESPN is a great way to get psyched up for the 2008 WSOP. You'll want to focus on 2003 and later, as these are the years where the hole card cams were in effect, allowing the maximum benefit for viewers. Years prior to this only showed the final six, with commentators and viewers only speculating on the hole cards of the players, except for the occasional "sneak peek" that the regular cameras were able to provide. Still, the famous 1989 "Rounders" final of Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel, the 1998 "You call it's gonna be all over baby" match of Scotty Nguyen vs. Kevin McBride, and 2002's "Robert Varkonyi wins/Phil Hellmuth shaves head" are all fun to watch.

Play The WSOP at Home

Activision has come out with "World Series of Poker 2008: Battle for the Bracelets" for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and other systems. While these games are not played for real money, the money seems real to your computer opponents, and can provide a fun opportunity to gear up for the main event.

Read About the WSOP

There are plenty of WSOP books out there to get you raring to go for the main event. "All In-The (Almost) Entirely True Story of The World Series of Poker" by Jonathan Grotenstein and Storms Reback gives a blow by blow account of every WSOP from the beginning to the present day. "The Championship Table at the World Series of Poker" by Dana Smith and Tom McEvoy gives the highlights and final hand of ever WSOP final table from the beginning to 2003.
