Exposing hole cards

Question:

Hi

I've been enjoying your website. I have a question about exposing my hole cards. I understand it's wrong to do this as long as there are people still competing in a hand (even if I've folded), but is it legal if I am the very last person responding to an all-in bet?

For example, seven players have folded, and my opponent goes all-in. I want my opponent to see my cards before I call or fold (to see his/her reaction), so I turn them over. Is this legal? And is it legal in both ring games and tournaments?

Thanks in advance,

Loren

Answer:

Hi Loren,
There is no general answer to this question. When it comes to showing your cards to your opponent the rules differ between casinos. You are usually not allowed to show your cards in tournaments, but many casinos allow this in cash games. Always check the local rules in advance or you risk having your hand declared dead if you display it before the showdown.
