Explanation of Positions in Poker

Hello. I have seen a couple of definitions of the early positions. 1) Small blind, big blind and the player to the left of the big blind. 2) The player to the left of the big blind and the two players to the left of him. Which is the correct opinion?

Hi Steve

The traditional definition of the positions at a ten-player table is

Seat 1: Early Position

Seat 2: Early Position

Seat 3: Early Position

Seat 4: Early Position

Seat 5: Middle Posiition

Seat 6: Middle Posiition

Seat 7: Late Position (cut off)

Seat 8: Late Position (button)

Small Blind

Big Blind

This is obviously not set in stone. Some might argue that seat four is middle position or seat six is late. But that doesn't really matter. As always in poker, these positions are just there to help you structure your game and not give you the exact answer to what starting hands to play etc.
