Dressing for Live Poker
Dressing at a live poker game is an interesting subject. You would think most players come to the events dressed like James Bond or Joe Hachem (the 2005 WSOP main event winner). This is not the case at all. In live poker tournaments with millions and millions of dollars at stake, sometimes players dress as if they still live at home. What's the deal?
Comfort Comes First
Obviously, when you are playing in a long drawn out tournament, the number one thing on you should consider is comfort. Whether it is a loose shirt or shorts, do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable. Your comfort is important. Even if you are a a rock star during your regular life, at the poker table it's probably a good idea to leave the leather pants at home.
Image is Everything
On the other hand, players often dress according to the image they're trying to create. Take Chris "Jesus" Ferguson who dresses like a cowboy at the poker table. This persona he created for himself is a ploy to intimidate players to feel that this old style (at least in appearance) is indeed intimidating.
Other poker players have to cater to their image, especially if they have sponsors. You can see many players sporting a baseball hat or polo shirt with the logo of the poker team that sponsors them.
Don't Forget You're Playing Poker
When dressing for live poker, it is important to consider your wardrobe as a means of strategy. For example, many players wear sunglasses. This isn't because they think they are cool. This is because they don't want other players to read them. Players who wear sunglasses are harder to read. The eyes reveal the truth, and if you can't see someone's eyes, then they are more likely to get away with bluffs. Sunglasses are a very popular accessory at the live poker table.
Another popular accessory are headphones. Some players would rather not listen to the all the blather at the table. These players bring headphones. They would rather listen to their own music, than the ramblings of a bunch of their opponents. Why not listen to music that will put you in a good mood? The better state your mind is in, the more likely you will be operating out of a safe and smart mode to succeed in live poker.
