H.O.R.S.E.: The Player's Championship
Poker's Greatest Ambassador
Doyle Brunson is poker's greatest ambassador; he is the man to thank for making the game of No-Limit Hold'em what it is today! He allowed for the first peek behind the curtain into the professional poker player's mind with his book Super System, and continues to push the envelope today staying actively involved with his online venture, Doyle's Room. He is, in a rare way, a completely accessible celebrity that has always enjoyed knowing his competition.
The Nickname
"Texas Dolly" was not a name of choice, and it certainly left a few brows furrowed when it was announced for the first time. The story is simple, but added even more texture to an illustrious career. When being introduced at an event, Doyle Brunson was to be introduced as Texas Doyle, but the card was accidentally misread by the late Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder; he saw Texas Dolly, read it, and moved on down the list. What followed as jest from fellow competitors became habitual and it quickly stuck. To this day, in the most elite poker company, the name Dolly is code for one man.
WSOP
Doyle made his first mark at the growing World Series of Poker in the year of 1976, winning the $10,000 No-Limit Championship and solidifying his place in poker history. Within another year, his place in history would be to make history as he repeated the feat, as well as taking another bracelet in a 7-Card variety. Over the next several years, Doyle would continue to make his mark at the WSOP poker, racking up 6 bracelets within a 4 year span. Most recently he took home the title in the $5,000 Short-handed No-Limit Hold'em in 2005. He continues to stay actively involved with the World Series of Poker as a player and in offering new players their shot at the bigs through Doyle's Room.
