Does only the highest flush card count?

i know you prob get this alot but i had a big arguement with some guy last night about what would happen in this flush situation. The board ended up having a king high flush all were spades.

i was out of the hand but he kept betting. they flipped there cards and he had a queen of spades. i said you have to have an ace to win the pot or its a split pot.

he argued and said his queen played. i was wondering if you have to have the ace of spades to win that hand and not have a split pot.

whenever ive played its the highest card flush that wins no matter what other cards you have.

thanks for the help, keith.

Answer:

Hi Keith,

In holdem the best five card poker hand always wins the pot. In this situation the person with the queen of spades have a KQxxx flush which beats all other flushes (Kxxxx), except flushes containing an ace. (When you determine who has the highest flush you first look at the highest card, then the next and so on.)

So the guy you had an argument with wins that pot as long as no other player holds the ace of spades. (There is no split pot.)

Regards, Clark
