Do I have to announce raise verbally?

When a bet is made, and you want to raise, can you just say raise or do you have to say the amount or "all-in". What is the correct way?

Hi Ralph

You can either say the amount you want to raise or just put the chips into the pot. However, if you say what you want to raise, and put in a different amount, your verbal announcement is binding.

You can avoid some trouble by always announcing what to raise. In doing so, you will for instance never make a string-bet. Also, when you throw one chip into the pot, without saying "raise", it will always be considered a call. For example if you are facing a $100 bet and silently flip a $500 chip into the pot.

You could also announce raise, put the call in, and then start counting the chips you want to raise with. Again, what you say is binding and your raise will not be ruled as a string bet.

Both ways work, but announcing the raise verbally is better if you sometimes make mistakes when putting the chips into the pot.
