Can I muck my cards?

I was always under the impression that if you are in a hand & call someone after the river, he has to show first & you have the option to muck your cards... When I was at a recent game, I was told that no matter what, everyone in the hand at the end of the hand had to show...

Can you please tell me if I call someone after the river, do I have to show, or can I muck after I see that I am beat. I am the caller, not the better.

If I do not have to show, is there a website that states this? I can not find that rule anywhere...

Hi Greg,
I would argue that the general rule is that you only have to show your hand in order to claim the pot. If you know you are beat there is nothing stopping you from throwing the cards in the muck.

But I know that local exceptions from this rule exist in some card rooms. Most online poker rooms also let you see the losing player's cards in the hand history if a hand goes to showdown, even when they're mucked.
