Losing A Set Of Aces
I am on the button. I get pocket Aces. I realize that I needed the field thinned to make these worth anything, but the tables was fairly loose and I knew that I would get a bunch of callers making my chances of success slim anyway, so I limped in.

So now I have position 3,4,5,6 to worry about and I have a set. My fear was a flush draw and possibly a low straight draw.
Turn is a 9d. Now I am feeling great about my hand. 3 bets, 4 folds, 5 calls, 6 calls. I raise. 3 calls, 5 calls and 6 folds.
So now I have 3 and 5 with me. River comes 2s. I am thinking great because I have filled up and I was sure one of those players was on a flush draw that just hit and the other on a straight draw. Well 3 bets (my flush guy I guessed). 5 calls. I raise, 3 - re-raises, 5 folds. I take the last raise. He shows quad 2s.
Unbelievable. I can not blame him for not laying that hand down. In fact I admired him not to re-raise me on 4th street with that hand. He must have detected he may have been beat.
When I look back at that hand and analyze what I could have done differently the only thing I can come up with is that I should have just called on the river saving me $18 (3 extra bets). I was so focused on the fact that I filled up and there was a flush out there that I did not see the quads coming. At that point the pot was big enough that I should have just called and been satisfied filling up against a flush. Instead I did not read the situation clear enough and it cost me 3 more bets. I kind of got a little greatly and caught up in the moment. To top it all off he won a $330 jack pot with that hand to boot.
In conclusion I have to say that in my experience (and I have had many of them). I would take AKs over AA any day of the week. At least you can get away for AK if it does not hit. I believe fully what they say. You either lose big or win little with AA. If someone is drawing to a straight or a flush you are in trouble with this hand. If you hit the set, then chances are no one else has an Ace and they fold as soon as you bet anyway. I don't know. Some may disagree, but I prefer drawing hands over pocket pairs (mid to high suited connectors are best). When they hit they are usually monsters and when they miss you can easily lay them down.
Thanks,
Tom
