Always Protect Your Hand

Question:

We had a situation where 3 people were playing a hand and after the turn card, one folded and threw their cards on another player's hand instead of on the muck pile. The player whose cards were buried didn't remember what cards they had in their hand and wanted to call it a misdeal and take back their chips. What should we have done?

Thanks, Jeremy

Answer:

Hi Jeremy

In poker, players are responsible for protecting their own hole cards. If the player, whose cards got mixed up with the mucked cards, didn't have a card protector, there isn't much to do. His/her cards are considered dead, and he/she is not allowed to go on with the hand. But the rest of the players must carry on playing, and you can't call it a misdeal. If you did, players could take advantage of that rule and throw their cards on other players' hole cards every time they become disappointed with their starting hands.
