I was playing a cash sit and go a few years back now. i was doing quite well, around £38,000 in front of me. this had been sponsored by an overdraft credit cards and a loan, £24,000 all together. so i had won £14,000 so far that day.

i was on a decent roll of cards when i got pocket Kings. great i thought, here is my chance to get a bit of money. little raise before the flop, couple of callers. flop comes king king jack. couldn't believe my luck, so excited. so quiet check, bloke next to me raises, not a lot but enough to get a call from the other bloke and myself of course.

turn card, ace, great card hope someone has pockets so then they think they have full house whilst I'm still sat here with 4 kings. so i check again. bloke next to me is presenting 2 pair, other bloke is just calling. so the river a 10. means nothing to me apart from that if someone has a queen then they may call with a straight.

i raise this time betting a mean £10,000 the bloke next to me folds unexpectedly the other re-raises me. i'm shaking so much. glass of water is going all over me whilst i try and take a sip. i re-raise all in, £38,000 all on one hand, 4 kings. the pot is around £90,000 ish, my time has come. nice holiday the works. i turn over my hand 4 kings. couple of blokes applaud on a greatly played hand. i relax, take a sip of my water........................................................................the other bloke turns over queen 10. he's got a straight my heart is racing. wait. why is he smiling....................its a royal!!!!!

with all my excitement i had not noticed the flop, i had king clubs, king spades. flop came king hearts, king diamonds, jack hearts.................turn ace hearts...........river 10diamonds.

bloke was holding queen hearts, 10hearts.

my life is over. i have nothing. not even enough to get a large something!!!

i suffered from suicidal depression for almost a year and have not played since.

ALWAYS CHECK THE FLOP BEFORE BETTING YOUR LIFE!!!

Damn, that's one of the worst beats I have heard in a long time. I should probably say something wise here like - never gamble for money you can't afford to lose - but I won't. You left me speechless James. I can only agree with what you said and hope that you've managed to get back on track.
