Addition To Small Pocket Pair Strategy

Question: Just wanted to add something to the Small Pocket Pairs question posted on 22/06.

In fixed limit games, depending on position I would call provided there's been no raise (especially if it's quite a tight game). Then if I hit on the flop I would call them down, if not it's check/fold time.

In pot limit I would be careful not to overestimate what I have, and not get committed

In no limit I would only ever play if there were plenty of other callers pre-flop.

Does this seem a sensible approach??

Answer: Sort of... It all depends on the type of game you are playing in. If it is a tight game and you are opening in late position (the first one in), it would be better to raise the small pocket pairs. You have a chance to win outright. The worst play would be to just call. In a loose game where 6 people see the flop everytime, I would play any pocket pair in any position (for limit holdem). If the game is not too tight but not that loose either then it would be best to just call with the small pocket pairs in the back if there are a few people already in. You can mix up your play some and that's fine but most of the time you'll need to hit with pairs 88 or below to win.

Pot limit holdem and no limit are pretty much the same for playing small pairs. I like limping in with little pairs from early position even in tough games. I can easily fold if it gets too expensive but if you hit a set when someone has a big pair, you kill them. Most no limit games like $200 buy-in and below are still pretty passive. I even call people's raises sometimes preflop with a little pocket pair because if I hit I'll take their whole stack. For limit you can't do as much limping because the return isn't as high if you do hit. I play tighter in no limit post flop and loose preflop. The opposite is true for limit; I play tight preflop and then loosen up post flop. Good hands make money in limit; trapping hands make money in no limit. For example, in limit holdem having AA hold up makes a big pot while in no limit cracking someone's AA makes a huge pot.
