Noel Furlong Wins the Main Event

This year's champion was JJ "Noel" Furlong, who took out Alan Goehring at the final table. Furlong won a cool $1,000,000, and the runner-up brought home an impressive $768,625. Furlong is a recreational poker player from Dublin, Ireland, who also owns a multimillion-dollar carpet cleaning company. He only plays poker in major tournaments, like the WSOP, and his win in the 1999 event was his first and only bracelet.

How did he do it? Let's look at the interesting final hand where both players drew pairs.

Furlong held a 5C 5D.
Goehring drew a 6H 6C.

Furlong vs. Goehring

Neither player made big bets going into the flop. Furlong limped in and Goehring did not raise. The flop turned out to be great for Furlong: QS QC 5S. He had a full house. How would he bet? What would he do not to scare his opponent away? Furlong checked. Goehring checked too.

The turn card was a 2S, not helping Goehring, who checked. Now Furlong bet $150,000, and for some reason, Goehring re-raised to $300,000, at which point Furlong went all-in. Goehring, who needed a 6 or a Q, only four outs, called anyway. The river was an 8S, no one had a flush, not that it would have mattered, because the Irishman had this hand long ago, winning with a full house.
