1993 WSOP

The 1993 World Series of Poker main event produced another record field, this time of 220, although the first prize remained at $1,000,000. Nearly half the players who held seats won them in satellite tournaments, smaller tournaments for which the prize was entry to the main event. This was considered an impressive victory for the satellite concept at the time, even though today, the majority of seats in the main event are gained through satellite play.

Mansour Matloubi Finished Fourth

Although prior champions like Phil Hellmuth Jr., Johnny Chan and the previous year's winner Hamid Dastmalchi were expected to take a run at the title, the only former champion who came close was the 1990 champion Mansour Matloubi, who finished fourth, leaving the final battle to be waged between Jim Bechtel of Arizona, Glen Cozen of California and John Bonetti of Texas.

Set of Sixes

The key hand came shortly after Cozen, operating with a severely short stack, doubled through Bonetti, enabling him to survive, but still leaving him desperately in need of chips. Bechtel raised pre-flop with pocket sixes and Bonetti, with AK, called. Cozen also had a pocket pair and called as well. The flop was ideal for Bechtel, coming K 6 4, giving Bonetti top pair of kings and Bechtel a well hidden set of sixes. Cozen checked, and Bonetti, believing he was trapping his opponent, checked as well.

Some players might have checked in this situation, but Bechtel, hoping that Bonetti was making just this kind of trapping move, made a pot sized bet. Both Bonetti and Bechtel must have felt things were going just according to plan. Cozen folded and Bonetti raised. Bechtel, still wanting to appear weak, just called the raise. A jack came on the turn, and the trap was sprung, as Bonetti moved all-in. Bechtel called immediately, and shocking all who were watching, eliminated Bonetti, skyrocketing the short stacked Glen Cozen to second place and an extra two hundred thousand dollars.

Final Hand Anti-climax

After this clash, the final hand was rather anti-climactic. Three hands later, Cozen took a shot with the 7d 4h. Bechtel called with the Js 6s, and five meaningless board cards later, Jim Bechtel was the 1993 World Series of Poker champion. Neither player had much to complain about. Cozen had been out-chipped by a wide margin by both Bechtel and Bonetti, and certainly never expected to make it to the runner up position. Bechtel of course, was thrilled to join the ranks of World Series of Poker champions. Although he never duplicated his championship run, Bechtel continues to be a presence on the poker circuit, using the skills honed at the World Series of poker to challenge anyone who dares sit across the felt from him.
